LISTERIOSIS OUTBREAK - UPDATE FOR COPERNICUS LODGE
On August 20, 2008, the Chief Medical Officer of Health advised the public of a Listeriosis outbreak in Ontario. Listeriosis is caused by Listeria monocytogenes (commonly known as listeria), a bacterium that is widespread in the environment, found in soil, vegetation, water, sewage and the feces of animals and humans. Listeriosis is a reportable disease in Ontario. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) collected and tested food samples to identify the cause of the Listeria infection. This investigation resulted in a recall of ready-to-eat deli meats, manufactured in one food processing plant in Toronto. I wish to advise you that Copernicus Lodge responded immediately once learning of the Listeria outbreak, by contacting all of our meat suppliers and completing a detailed review of all meat products on premises, and those served within our home over the past 90 days. As a result of this investigation, I can assure you that NONE of the affected meat products have been served within our home over the past 90 days or on our premises. In addition to this, we successfully passed a recent inspection by Toronto Public Health. “For a complete listing of all recalled items please visit the Ministry of Health website at www.health.gov.on.ca To ensure everyone’s health and safety at Copernicus Lodge, I am asking that if you think you may have consumed, or brought in any of the affected products for someone within our home within the past 90 days, please speak to the appropriate healthcare provider immediately (RN on unit, Supportive Housing Staff, Department Manager, and/or Family Doctor). Signs and symptoms of listeria are vomiting, nausea, cramps, diarrhea, severe headache, constipation or fever. Please let us know immediately if you have any of these symptoms.
Please feel free to contact me should you have any further questions or require further information at 416-536-7122 extension 238. Thanks.
Sincerely, Tracy Kamino Executive Director
